MAR 17, THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER
With spring around the corner, 2017 seemed to beckon spring a bit earlier with Pantone announcing the color of the year "Greenery." A few years back it was Emerald but this year's color is a true spring grass green that has home decor and all things architecture sprouting alongside the new color trend. A safe bet as 'green' underscores a healthier lifestyle and promotion of LEED minded renovations and construction. In the course of a year, so too has a newcomer arrived on the scene of all things "Green", that of WELL Certification.
The first initiative put forth to clearly identify with the interior occupant of space "people." Considering we are indoors 90% of the time, filters are not enough, filters that are changed regularly, hydration stations and lighting that adjusts to our circadian rhythm are now on board. WELL focuses on AIR, WATER, NOURISHMENT, LIGHT, FITNESS, COMFORT and MIND. More can be found @ wellcertified.org.
It does not take much to pepper our environment with greenery or drape ourselves in green minded fashion. Moreover, one only has to look to nature to see that green pastures give way to the most breathtaking entry points of dwellings. Inspired by barn banks, knolls of gently sloping grass covered hills, barn banks have been around for centuries allowing for cattle to effortlessly enter and exit barns.
Take the concept one step further and you can find stunning creative approaches from residences to public spaces.
The 70s were marked by the "mod-macrame" plant hanger. Hideous to be honest, I always thought... until recently, I came across a vintage, natural rope colored macrame at a second hand store and rethought its off-putting style. It was actually a generous solution and held its own architecture of sorts. To be able to hand weave a nautical grade rope into a geometry of beauty was to be appreciated. So I bought it. It has fostered a new appreciation for plants that now adorn my once purposefully austere all-white modern office with
a new pop of green-color and the benefit of oxygen as well.
Green has made a comeback indeed but for all the right reasons. How you interpret your green space is up to you be it a hand blown green glass tumbler from Maison et Object or your own green barn bank entrance on that summer retreat you have been always dreaming to plan-they say...the "grass is always greener" be the first to claim your stake so no 'green jealousy' takes over later for not having made the creative effort.

(Below) The design of the temporary house can be best described as a Yourtopia, a personal but also utopian vision on living in the early 21st century. Social issues like the influence of globalization, the longing for privacy and the almost perverse imbalance in the distribution of wealth have changed our vision on contemporary architecture. Therefore with the design of this temporary house, Search Architects Amsterdam went back to the basics:
“What are our minimum needs in order to enjoy a maximum quality of life?”
