MAR 1 WINTER'S OPTIMISM
The difficult winter of 2013/14 has certainly taxed many. It is especially difficult to be "creative" in an environment that is frozen over. As designers, we look for constant inspiration and being indoor is not always ideal especially in below freezing weather. Industry conventions can help but too can prove stale & fatiguing when one visits too many. Inspiration can blur together and leave convention goers in a designer's "fog". Yet, It can be the subtlest of imagery that inspires, especially if from nature. If inspiration is lacking for too long...we tend to force it out of its natural timeline for our physiological benefit. For instance, the brilliant yellow optimism of Forsythia. I only thought recently how Forsythia sounds like... "forced". Hmmmm, well I admit I am guilty of this arborist tactic. I j'adore a room filled with the cheerful delicacy of the Forsythia. Many years of forced blooms have brightened the last dreary days of a prolonged winter. Maybe my desire is not alone...I have seen forced bursts of color appear from the cracks of fashion houses alike. Be it architecture or fashion the industries all need only a bit of radiant yellow to keep us going till spring. Thanks to the ability to "force" Forsythia...we have optimism on an otherwise grey day. Image below:
It does not take long for designers to be creative with their new inspiration. In a simple glass vase or architecturally aligned.

At NYC's recent Fashion Week 2014, taxis, typically a visual pollution seemed like chariots of spring only outdone by the bright yellow winter coats adorned by the industry's fashion buyers.

While Radiant Orchid is the "It" color this year, the natural compliment to purple is yellow.
Perhaps another reason yellow is making a strong appearance in accessories.

...and in architecture.
Whatever your personal style of delivery, be it fashion or a large set of canvased art; yellow's optimism never disappoints.
Yellow lifts moods and energizes conversation, just what we need to get through the last grey days of winter.
Perhaps Dickens in 1859 said it best:
"...it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair"
