MAR 28 VAST VISTA
The face of fashion is always changing, so too is design in every sense. Inspiration is all around us, for example, the physical illustrative effort that Japanese youth put into their daily ensembles. Glimpses of the future layered with traces of the past come together in an almost cinematic portrayal that is not to be ignored. As a whole, the imagery in outfit form is almost comic to a unrealistic slant and yet can't we say the same when we explore innovative futurist interior design and far reaching concept architecture? Whether built on a site or on a bodice, color, curves and technology become the driving force behind innovation and interpretation it seems when looking to the future. Much like the Japanese youth, in time, we will look back at their fashion statements and recognize the vast vista of style forecasting they was cast upon us-inspiring street art that is free of a gallery admission price. Elements of form, color & light that are far from fantasy...more over the reality of what is to come.

To define the future is the ultimate ability, but to forecast is every designer's best effort.
Interestingly, imaginative, shinny, glittery and techno still reign supreme when fashion designer's let their imaginations run.

"Argentinian artist Tomas Saraceno goes beyond the traditional conceptions of place, time, gravity and our familiar notions of architecture. Saraceno is an artist and architect who's visions for cities floating in the air have led him to create a series of experimental structures such as balloons or inflatable modular platforms that can be inhabited and exploit natural energies. Any of his objects is an invitation to think about alternative knowledge, about emotions and the interaction with others." His work is fluid and inviting, futuristic and intriguing at the same time but above all an experience you want to be part of an not have to wait for the future. Lucky for us many of his works exist for us to enjoy in the now.

The future was void of color in Woody Allen's "Sleeper" movie, mainly a canvas of whites on whites. A classic movie for emerging designers and architects alike to draw inspiration from because there was void and then there was color in the giant fruit scene that Allen came upon. Color so brilliant it burst off the screen as if one was eating fresh picked genetically modified goodness in their living room. The fruit's color seem to enhance the movie experience as if to ooze out of our televisions, such a departure from the stark interiors the viewer had experienced up to the garden scene. Yet as effective in setting a scene that evoked futuristic concepts and application. The same delirium of color overload was the effect one felt when the viewer along with the lucky Wonka ticket holder children came upon when they experienced the lick-able wall paper in Willy Wonka. It was simply beyond our wildest dream to imagine and viewers did despite the fact that many watching Willy Wonka still did not have color televisions in their households.

Interior spaces today that dip in to cinematic realm of fantasy seem to delight and intrigue at the same time. Coined "Futuristic" by many on lookers and clientele, it simply is a compliment when one is w/o words. It is instantly understood to hold back on criticism and embrace what the designer has in store saying something is "futuristic" in may ways sums it up. Case in point, Karim Rashid work. Rashid's designs teeter on realism yet offer creativity in textures and curvilinear forms that while different are comforting and familiar in an abstract way. Karim Rashid is an industrial designer and interior architect. His designs include luxury goods, furniture, lighting, surface design, brand identity and packaging. Another example of his recent works using curvilinear forms and color impact is the pharmacy below. Well off the path of what is expected. So the real question is...when a design tilts towards unfamiliar or unrecognizable in source does it then become "futuristic"? Furthermore do we suspend critic of the space for the exchange of recognition of creativity expressed? Do they cancel out? thus becoming almost gallery-like in user/customer experience?
"My real desire is to see people live in the modus of our time, to participate in the contemporary world, and to release themselves from nostalgia, antiquated traditions, old rituals, kitsch and the meaningless." Karim Rashid
In the lobby entry below, Cinema Futura
in Zhongshan, China goes beyond color, form and light play. The finished space intrigues and redefines what a movie theater entry was and questions what should be much like Rashid's work sets out to do—architect Alexander Wong.
While far from cuvliniear...there remains a futuristic feel in form and use. No doubt, color has an impact and insists upon an immediate reaction. Color theory and its studied effects is critical when virtually no other color is used.

Purple, evokes mystery, regal luxury and when paired with LED lighting the overall effect is a ride into the outer realm of pure chicness. Naturally, the question of codes does come into play but as a concept it is intriguing.

3D modeling and rendering has allowed the design and architectural industry to unveil forms never before milled, routed or pre-cast. Polymers and composites have provided a new vista on which to experiment and set apart firm's creative endeavors. But above all what makes a room is lighting and with the onset of LED, controlled lighting, timed lighting in theater like programming, the sky is the limit in concept no matter how far reaching it seems.

What is most amazing is that despite all the technology and resource software that is available to designers today to expand concept, one does not have to look far for inspiration that is as intriguing, color mind bending & can be re-purposed.
