March 2022 LET THERE BE LIGHT
At the most basic level, light can be captured, manipulated and projected in casings we design, the fixture itself.
How much light and the type of light from retro incandescent to LED is determined by the environment to which designers can choose to illuminate at varied levels or not.
The spatial output of light has undergone a renaissance in 'user-experience' from the intimidate café table to
IT backdrop choreographed effects that aim to amplify concert experiences on the world stage production.
The controlled diminuendo of light in darkened cloistered alcoves that engulf speak easy bars removed from the bustle at street level is one end of the spectrum.
Lighting today and its conveyance is far from dimming.

For the first time in forty years, Abba the musical group, has masterly merged their digital format songbook with a state of the art production-stage light show, the main attraction, supported by the group members in digital avatar form.
A revolutionary concert that blends the physical and the digital worlds and is 'technically immensely complicated".

Abba's avatar form of interaction that engages the audience though light in fanfare of music is in many ways not far off from appeasing today's fashionistas. Branded street-side digital projection on two prominent corners in NYC at 57th street beckons loyal customers and onlookers alike.

Half way around the globe, Louis Vuitton’s Ginza Namiki-Dori store, which has been under construction and offers and artful play on light, a building skin facelift applied, revealing a shimmering facade reflection, a 21st century imprint of the immersive Japanese urban environment.
Below, the public displays of lights goes back to early Christmas displays, but such efforts are on the mega grand scale as cities around the globe illuminate their parks year round: Shown purple LED supertree towers of Singapore.
"Supertrees belong to a display at the 250-acre Gardens by the Bay. The high-tech structures range from 80 to 160 feet and collect solar energy to power a nightly light show. They have a softer side too: their trunks are vertical gardens, laced with more than 150,000 living plants."

As far as we have progressed in bulb (lamp) options, the desire to reflect on the past with 21st century convenience and lamp use is the new driver. Case in point, retro incandescent color-like (LED) lamps in a variety of styles.
Below, light near refraction can be mesmerizing in beauty and dreamt usage.
Below, today's lighting designers are pushing the envleope on sustainable light sources combined with artful expressionism.
Is it light, art or both? For the viewer to decide.

(Below two images) On the other spectrum of light-beyond concept to production...Centered on calm and purity of design in light form..."Nearly two decades after launching his Mamo Nouchies, a series of lights made from pleated Japanese paper, German designer Ingo Maurer has created a variety of new shapes. Among them is Moonati, a wall light with a shell-like shape, and Yoruba Rose, the table version.

From amped up light applications to the camp of biomimicry in light source, lighting has captured the dreamers to the production line creators. The challenge now is to authentically merge both.
Below: Bright Idea! "Over the course of a day, the curtain filters out 1kg of CO2 from the surrounding air, or the equivalent of 20 large trees! In addition to this already-sustainable function, the curtain also shades the building, reducing heating costs, and produces biomass that can be burned for energy or recycled into bioplastics like the ones used to make it."
Now to go a step farther: explore sealing types of algae that would create natural façade illumination @ night...
"Marine creatures like some fish, squid, tiny crustaceans and algae produce bioluminescence"

"There’s something very special about bioluminescent algae. They soak up sunlight, absorb carbon dioxide, and in return, breathe out oxygen while emitting a soft fluorescent glow. In essence, it’s nature’s all-in-one version of a solar panel, a carbon sink and a light bulb."

Researchers at Cambridge University engineered a strain of E.coli—"that infamously insistent bacterium—to glow: "E.glowli." The E.glowli project was an experiment in biomimicry: the process of using the natural world as a guide to develop new technology."

As we advance in the design of new futures, lamps and sources, from of design/architecture will still seek out the sunlit space for optimal photography.
