Over the past several years, a ground swell of design for the benefit of indoor/outdoor access of staff and impromptu meetings became mainstay. Pairing with COVID, the pandemic welcomed the trend at an alarming rate. From biophilia, benefiting the built environment with the infusion of natural material-greenery to biomimicry in novel design element itself. The allure of the indoor/outdoor-scape populated workplaces to the
En plein air transitioned restaurants at the drop of a wall switch or lifted oversized in-vogue glass garage door.
The physiological health benefit of a tete-a-tete over lunch to employee generated corporate innovation through ideation reinforced the initial planning with rave reviews underscoring sunlight and fresh air is here to stay. Yet, as we peer through the variegated ivy beyond the plane of extruded aluminum and injected mold thermoplastic seating occupying terraces and encroached sidewalks alike; the subtle yet sole actor that physically enables the pop-up outdoor environment's success is not the wait staff, customer, team lead nor color pop of plastic seating, it is the unadorned retaining wall of brick that beckons an 'About Face' to hail its beauty in simplest form-clay.
Akin to James Bond, who is often in the unassumed corner but always impeccably well-dressed no less, the facade wall elevation bond, that of of "Brick" is stepping out of the background, no longer a wall flower, and justifiably entitled to the full spotlight. Move over reclaimed wood bar top, salvaged black walnut shelf accent shelf with prized live face edge... there is another material, as sustainable, highly intelligent, exceedingly cunning and diabolically independent while cool and classic the same, that of brick.
Brick has finally found it's curtain call. Just call me "Bond", "Brick Bond".

The industrial pendant lights, woolen blankets and reclaimed wood create the rustic Höst Scandinavian dining room, and while the wood shelving adds warmth and function (below); it is the brick wall behind the shelving that beckons attention in sublime character and detail intrigue .
The pendants lights (below) while heavy in mass and fortified in color is a collective formidable contenders for understated elegance and focal point, however, it is the brick wall, once more, that one focuses on sans color saturation.
