Entryways, doorways, thresholds all fascinate perhaps because of the unknown experience of the portal that awaits one beyond the entryway. While it can be deceiving, in that, an ornate door can simply lead to a narrow alley between two buildings; the opportunity to anticipate and explore is compelling. With one spin of our globe and it is not hard to find doors carved, engraved, adorned and encrusted by centuries old craftsmen and conversely modern expressions of extractions of purposefully minimalist adornment. Even the most modest homes perched high on a Grecian hardscape have doors painted in unexpected bursts of cerulean blue tones reflecting the Mediterranean sea’s beauty below. Color in all hues and faux finishes can beckon the summer traveler to take note and ponder the door's ability to draw attention. Is it color? or is it the use of color against a contrasting backdrop that sets the dramatic stage for the ideal photo op? A door’s style and color that seduces at onset is enhanced by the mystique as to where the door beyond leads one to. Doors are the gatekeeper to the destiny beyond of the inhabitant. A door, in many ways, can act as the ultimate 'calling card' defining one's taste. Humble lifestyle or noble leader, only the door when opened can expose the true identity & lifestyle within. As life's travelers, we can live vicariously through what the door’s exterior worn or wrought provides; a treasure trove of architectural ornamentation and character to be noted in sketch, photo or memory and perhaps sparking the beginning of next summer's fiction best seller.
